Is It Fair To Compare?

Kim Davis is the Rowan County, Kentucky clerk who made national headlines by refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. She even went to jail for 5 days and may end up there again for her refusals.

My comments here aren’t about whether I think she is right or wrong.  Sadly, I don’t know our constitution and the amendments well enough to make an informed, legal judgment.  I do know that I admire someone whose belief is so strong that they will sacrifice their freedom for it.

Having said that, I wondered about some of the mean-spirited comparisons that are floating around the internet and social media. Of course there are those who compare “Kim Davis, conservative Christian” to radical religious extremists. I don’t think that comparison is apt.

But then, trolling around the interwebs the other day, I came across a post that compared the situation in this way: A sign, posted on an office door stated “We are no longer issuing fishing licenses because our boss is an vegan.” After chuckling a bit, I got one of those Scooby-Doo head-tilts and thought “Ruh-roh. Could this be a relevant comparison?”

Is it?
