Reflections About Spring Break

Often I wonder where my students travel on Spring Break or if they don’t travel, what do they actually do. I remember when I was in college my ultimate goal was to party in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida because…hmm, I think because I thought it was the place to be for “fun” and relaxation after my totally exhausting college courses and studying.

Ahhh, nope, that doesn’t seem accurate. I really wasn’t exhausted from studying or my courses but I truly believed that I deserved some “leisure” time after working for three or four years at earning my degree. I think that’s what I thought then…

Now, after many, many years you’d think my goals would have changed. Namely, I ought to think that the time given for Spring Break should be about catching up on reading and studying NOT running away from coursework. After all, being a college student is such a cushy job. Really, how difficult can it be nowadays?

Not-so-fast: Many recent research studies reflect that college students today are more stressed and experience significantly more anxiety than previous generations. In an article published by Forbes Magazine, author Caroline Beaton states,  “According to the American Psychological Association (APA), millennials experience more stress and are less able to manage it than any other generation. More than half of us admit to having lain awake at night during the past month from stress” (February, 2016).

In this same article, Ms. Beaton lists 8 Habits That Make You Anxious and Stressed ( but take heart, once you know what gives you headaches, you can then treat it.

And so we come full circle. Go ahead and party, relax, chill, etc., or whatever rejuvenates you over college breaks. Do not feel guilty or less than, instead remember what taking a “break” means…
